Susan Lieberman, director of international policy for the Pew Environment Group, issued the following statement today in response to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) committee vote on Monaco’s proposal to prohibit international trade of Atlantic bluefin tuna. The proposal failed by a vote of 20 for, 68 against, and 30 abstentions.

The Scottish Pelagic Sustainability Group’s (SPSG) Atlanto-Scandian herring fishery has been certified as a sustainable and well-managed fishery under the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) standard. Herring taken from this fishery are now eligible to bear the MSC eco label. The assessment was carried out by independent certifier Food Certification International.

Blue whiting gets a flying start.. 

Three of HB Grandi’s pelagic vessels have started fishing on blue whiting and have made an excellent start to the season. Ingunn AK was first on the fishing grounds and is now on the way home with 1900 tonnes on board for two days fishing. There’s a price to be paid for such good fishing as the grounds are west of Ireland, around 700 nautical miles from Iceland.

First French fishery awarded MSC sustainability certification.. 

EURONOR, the French saithe fishery , based in Boulogne-sur-Mer, has just been awarded the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certificate for sustainable and well-managed fisheries following a 13-month assessment. This is the first French fishery to achieve MSC certification and saithe (Pollachius virens) from the EURONOR fleet is now eligible to display the MSC eco-label. A press event will be held at the MSC stand (6-853) at the European Seafood Exposition in Brussels on 28th of April to celebrate the certification.

World’s largest wild scallop fishery enters MSC full assessment process.. 

The U.S. Atlantic sea scallop (Placopecten magellanicus) dredge fishery operating in the exclusive economic zone of the United States of America offshore from Maine to Cape Hatteras, North Carolina is entering full assessment in the Marine Stewardship Council’s (MSC) certification program for sustainable and well-managed fisheries. The fishery will be assessed against the MSC Standard and, if successful, its products will be eligible to bear the MSC ecolabel recognizing products from well-managed and sustainable sources.
