Bugøyfisk F-5-SV

Seaway Marine deliver first catamaran fishing vessel for Norway

Burgøynes, in northern Norway, welcomes the new catamaran Bugøyfisk F-5-SV to its waters. Tom Egil Hansen ordered Bugøyfisk, LOA 10.65m, from Seaway Marine in 2009. Gemini Workboats fabricated Bugøyfisks’ hull, a GF10 semi-displacement catamaran hull. This was then towed to Macduff, where Seaway Marine fitted Bugøyfisk out.

Bugøyfisk design allows for versatility in fishing methods, as well as decent-sized storage areas, a large working deck and a roomy wheelhouse. With a LOA of 10.65m, a beam of 5.2m and a depth of 1.4m, Bugøyfisk also has design features that ensure efficiency and stability while at sea. Sea trials indicated a top speed of 20 knots.

The catamaran design is an optimal one for owner Tom Egil Hansen, as his intention is for inshore static gear fishing in northern Norway, in the Artic Circle. Bugøyfisk is set up as a gillnetter, long liner and a crab potter, depending on the season. Tom Egil Hansen is intending to work on inshore waters ranging from 10m to 400m, with king crab pots worked in a combination of single enders for the bigger traps and short strings for the smaller ones.

The twin Sisu four cylinder engine drives a ZF 2:1 reduction ratio gearbox, through to a 600mm diameter five blade propeller. The two fuel tanks hold 750 litres each, and are placed in each sponson. The Sisu diesel engine also drives the hydraulic drive for the deck machinery. Bugøyfisk’s deck machinery includes a Meydam 500kg static gear hauler, a Meydam net flaking machine and a Hiab crane.

Electrotech Marine Ltd. of Scotland fitted out Bugøyfisk’s large wheelhouse with a range of electronics to suit. These include a selection of Furuno FCV295 colour sounder, M1944 radar and a SC60 satellite compass. Bugøyfisk also has a Simrad AP35 autopilot.

The benefit of the catamaran design in combination with the engine capabilities is increased efficiency, as it allows versatility in fishing methods and allows the vessel to cover larger fishing grounds.
