FN234 Canopus & FN104 Carpe Diem

FN234 Canopus & FN104 Carpe DiemNewbuildings 411 and 412 from Karstensen Shipyard in Skagen was handed over to skipper/owners Jens og Erik Vinther Poulsen on 3 July 2009. The following day, the 2 vessels were officially launched and named during a enjoyable ceremony at the owners homeport of Oesterby on the island of Laesoe. It has been many, many years since just a single newbuilding was delivered to Laesoe, and these 2 are by far the largest ever built to the island.

Newbuilding 411 “Canopus” (= white-yellow giant star – the 3.-most brightest in the universe seen from the earth) is replacing Jens Vinther Poulsens previous command of the same name. The previous “Canopus” was built in 1986, but had been rebuilt and modernized over the years.

FN234 Canopus & FN104 Carpe DiemNewbuilding 412 “Carpe-Diem” (= “catch-the-day” in latin) is replacing Erik Vinther Poulsens previous command of the same name. The previous “Carpe-Diem” was built in 1988, but had been rebuilt and modernized over the years.

In addition to before mentioned, the owners have purchased a number of other vessels in order to give quota to the new vessels.

The skipper/owners desires for optimization of the catch has resulted in a pair of very well-equipped vessels. Noticeable items are:

  • Freezing: As the first prawn-trawlers in the seas of Skagerrak and Kattegat, the vessels are equipped with freezing facilities, in order to optimize prices on 5-6 days old prawns.

  • Icemachine: To minimize running expenses and down-time in harbor. The vessels are supplied with own ice making plant.

  • Packing at sea: To optimize value of catch and reduce harbor expenses, the vessels are fitted with complete pack-at-sea equipment.

  • In addition to above, the owners have emphasized on optimum handling of the fishing gear. Thus the 2 vessels are designed as sFN234 Canopus & FN104 Carpe Diemtern trawlers with net drums and cod-end hatch aft. This arrangement makes it possible to handle the fishing gear safely, efficient and fast even with a small crew. The trawl deck is arranged for a total of 4 complete nets.

Finally it is worth mentioning that the accommodation is built to a very high standard, ie 3 cabins, so each crewmember will in reality have his own cabin whilst at sea. The accommodation is also noise insulated according to the newest ideas, and the technical trial showed a very low noise level, with reading between 49 and 54 dB(A) !
